Costa Rica
March 8-17, 2011

This trip report will be short and sweet. We arrived in-country on March 8th, drove to our coastal destination, checked-in to our hotel and quickly suited and waxed up for a late afternoon surf. The conditions were bumpy from all the wind but at least we were getting a moderate glass off and certainly good enough to stretch our arms and legs in the 3 to 5 foot surf. Maybe it was bigger but my memory fails me now. Below are a few snapshots from the trip.

During the first 5 days we mostly surfed two-a-days, once in the morning and once late in the afternoon, especially after the winds dies down. Midway throught the trip the Papagayo winds returned with brisk offshores until mid- to late-morning when they started to turn on-shore--no afternoon sessions on those days. The last two days of the trips feature light to no winds in the morning and throughout the day. It was on March 15th that DaGriz and I were able to ride the Outer Wash in nicely overhead conditions (8 to 10 foot).

The Outer Wash was a real treat for both of us. For me, I doubled my best ever wave count for an Outer Wash session from 6 to 12 waves. For Griz, it was a first ever experience in an open ocean reef break with the size and power one expects several hundred yards from the shore where the reef meets deep water. On one of Griz's first wave attempts you could see him backing off at the last second in the crest of the wave with eyes bulging have way down the face of the wave. Once he caught his first wave he was the stokedest animal around for hundreds of miles :)
