Dan
was hurting for surf the most, up early and stroking out to Sandy Beach
for a couple of quick curls. I brewed up some fresh coffee and watched
from our 2nd floor porch balcony. Just as we were ready to make the
Rincón surf check run, JCV awakens and insists upon joining us.
I said, "No!" We were busting out for a quick one hour surf 'n check
but Dan had to run back to the room for something. More stalls, pleading
and begging, "Wait for me!" Yeah, I thought to myself... wait an
hour to pull yourself together, drink some coffee, pop in contacts, apply
make-up, pick out the barbie outfits for the day.... "No! Carajo! Vamos!"
Dan and I bug out only to find a very small María's and a nearly
as small Domes that's already packing in the crowd. Everyone is so
surf starved after 3 weeks of virtually nothing. We buzzed back to the
villa. Prepare for the day's outing (see all of the above). Get ready.
OK, we're moving and JCV is primed having drank some good coffee, munched
my plantanutres, popped in her contacts, and donned her outfit for the
day's outing. But that was NOTHING compared to what would come next:
the "soft racks from hell" -- this monstrosity was indeed hatched from
the inferno (see JCV's
video from later in the day -- mild compared to our running commentary
that morning <g>). One-half hour later we are on the road. I had
already called ahead to my buddy who's house is perched right over PdP.
He reported some nice little lines rolling in cleanly with only a few local
bodyboarders out.

I
was hitting it itching for some of those tight little tubos as warm-ups.
Nothing like a tight little tubo to get the blood flowing. JCV and
I paddled out. I warned her about the shallowish reef, even at high tide,
but in my excitement neglected to mention a few other characteristics.
Hell, I was still groggy and stokin' to get wet.
JCV drew first blood of the
trip during a walk around dismount on the shallow inside reef. Other
than those little miscues on the inside she did very well going backside
- the waves were small and fairly safe, just the tricky inside. After
some period of time we trucked just down the road to buy some beers and
then checked the view from my friend's patio porch that is perched on the
cliff overlooking PdP and all of the bay with views to Rincón and
Borinquen. |
Buzzed
up to Wilderness expecting a little more in swell. There was some
but not sufficient for taking the boards out. Showed my visitors the "Shithouse."
Dan took a long swim, loving
the warm, clear waters with the highly visible reefs underneath while JCV
and I enjoyed the general atmosphere of Wilderness. Wildo is a surfing
spot that lives up to its name, a seaside plateau overlooking the reefs
and resting below towering cliffs that are obscured from view by tall trees
and lush undergrowth. I always enjoy viewing the turtles here. Very tranquil
and natural setting. Que bueno es! Wild and natural. Me amo
mucho. Does it get any better? Only when there is swellage!
But the swellage is beginning to show :)
We toured around the NW/N
coast area eventually ending up at Jobos Beach where we munched on some
empanadillas and drank some refreshing beverages. Here's a pic
of Dan and I at one of the bar/restaurants on the beach with a direct
view of the main break and the blow hole. |

After
a good nap at the villa it was time for dinner at the Lazy
Parrot. No sunset this evening because of the clouds in the western
sky... but the setting and view is beautiful. We did our best to
make up for it with a round of tropical drinks; appetizers of sorrullitos,
amarillos, tostones, and quesitos; and an excellent main course of chillo
specials for JCV and mio. Good meal all around.
Postscript: JCV is
really a very good traveler. Sure, she packs excessive amounts of grrrl's
things, but she gets us early, her stuff is organized, she's ready to go,
she doesn't whine and she adapted very well (except for the first morning
following a red-eye flight and losing four time zones, but she did damn
well here... she does NOT want to miss any of the action). |
