Sorry to bring up an old thread, but can someone please explain to me just what parabolic rails are. Please do so as if you are writing one of those how to books for the complete idiot, you 'll be on the money Laughing

Hi,
Parabolic rails curve inwards rather than just going in a straight line from nose to tail. Thus the board has a sort of narrow waistline in comparison to nose and tail width. If you notice Kid's third photo on the previous page, you'll see the tail seems to be slightly flaired out. That's the visual effect of the parabolic rails.

You can google out dozens of pics on alaia templates. Or take a look at Tom Wegener's page on alaias.

Here's one written explanation: http://surfinoregon.blogspot.com/2007/06/parabolas.html

Much more technical discussion & mumbo jumbo can be found on forums like Swaylocks & plenty of board builders' sites/blogs. Even though I've put a "parabolic" rail on most of my paipos, I suspect they don't make a huge difference on prone boards where your legs and fins are in the wave face acting as both an extension of your rail and a directional control. Here's 2 pics of my paipos. I made the yellow board for knee/drop knee riding. The brown board has a slight rail curve & flared tail, with the curve mid point being right about where my left hand is.
