Rod,

Seeing Kit & Jack's names together - they sound like gunslingers.

Are you finding much paipo stuff? We never heard back about the Steve Wilkings photo annual pic of Sean Ross. Keep an eye out for centrefolds?

regards

Bob

I reviewed/surveyed most of volumes 12 through 15, March 71-Jan 1975 - very little direct paipo/bellyboard data points, decreasing over time while at the same time there was a rise in kneeboarding content (articles and photos). Most references to bellyboarding were indirect (as part of other advertisements) and El Paipo and Newport Paipo adverts were mostly for kneeboards.

Did document the first "notice" of the Morey boogie board and the first adverts in issues that followed (like a two issue gap).

Unfortunately, there are not any older Surfer magazines in the Cocoa Beach Surf Museum's collection at the time (I had previously surveyed and scanned data points for volumes 8 through 11). No other real surf magazine expect for a couple of mid-70s issues of Surfing and Wave Rider. I have contacted an area shop owner for older issues of Surfer and other mags such as Surfing and Surf Guide. May also have a lead in Ocean City, Maryland. Also "reacquainted" with a guy from my Puerto Rico scholastic days in the late 1960s via postings he has made of Puerto Rican surf mag content on a Facebook page. He has offered to mail me on a loaner basis mags from his collection.

After exhausting these leads I will begin to reach out to others for "loaners" and then will have to visit the Surf Heritage Museum in San Clemente.

Rod,

I'll check if I have recently been sent a CA museum contact name.

For those of you who follow the interview series - here is the latest, an interview with Nels Norene, who some of you will know. As always, a very interesting story.

http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/NelsNorene/NelsN_2010-0316.shtml

I have probably mentioned this previously, but Rod is also working on a form where you can help out by submitting details of paipo riding in your local area. We want to put this together for a history of bellyboarding/paipo. Every little bit will help. A draft US document is currently structured around towns, so someone living in Santa Barbara, for example, could add what they know about the local area & so on.

Over the next month there should be 3 or 4 new interviews posted up.

Here is the latest interview:
http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/ColTaylor/ColTaylor_2010-0605.shtml

Col Taylor - particularly interesting is Col's description of the link between bodysurfing technique and how he and his mates rode these small ply boards in waves of consequence.

All,

A couple more interesting interviews, both from the US West Coast.

http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/Paipo_Interviews.shtml#Rick_Boufford

http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/RobertMoynier/RobertMoynier_2010-0705.shtml

Their surf craft of choice couldn't be further apart though.

Rod can 'relax' for a while now, but there are a few more coming soonish as well as the history form which will assist in documenting individual's accounts for a longer term history project.

regards

Those were great fun! I know a lot of effort goes into each interview and I very much appreciate it.

One question though, could not find anything recent about Candy Calhoun on quick google search. Is she still alive? Still surfing? Up for an interview??? Very Happy

Hello Geoffrey,

Thanks for the feedback. Regarding Candy. I made inquiries with a couple of people who knew her and it seems that she may not be interested in talking about surfing or the past. I don't have first hand knowledge of this but after looking into this, I don't believe it is feasible.

If someone knew Candy and she was interested - would be happy to make contact.

Probably one of the best leads from our paipo group in contacting Candy Calhoun would be John Mellor - he lives in general proximity from the best that I understand.

Another interview - Rainer was a contemporary of Paul Lindbergh (of HPD renown) and was mentored by John Waidelich. Lots of interesting story as well as some surfing technique info.

Ideas for more interviews are welcomed.

Just thought I'd let you know Rod has added a few interviews to the paipo interviews series. These include:

Kit Carson - ' Kirra Point, 6-8' on a piece of ply'
http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/KitCarson/KitCarson_2010-0505.shtml

Tony Dawes - "Chestboards' at Manly
http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/TonyDawes/TonyDawes_2010-1026.shtml

John Elwell - 'Continuing the Simmons legacy'
http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/JohnElwell/JohnElwell_2010-0823.shtml

Steve Osserman - 'Paipo riding on a taro leaf'
http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/StanOsserman/StanOsserman_2010-1211.shtml

Ian Peden - "Bodysurfing to bellyboarding'
http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/IanPeden/IanPeden_2010-1005.shtml

Also, the Sean Ross interview has some great new photos.

These are great! Especially like Osserman's design for some reason. Just grabbed my imagination. Easier way I think would be Home Depot foam and brace to glass to prevent warping, like making a flex spoon. Do the bottom then thin it way out before glassing deck...

The 2-page excerpt from the Lindsay Lord book, Naval architecture of planing hulls, has been updated with more readable scans and my annotated bibliography has also been added here where you will find additional narrative excerpts and a couple of figures:

Rod,

In the Margan & Finney book, as well as the Klein Book we can identify some of the un-named paipo riders. Did you want to add surfers names - where known?

Puurri may be able to assit with some of the Cronulla photos.
