I've been threatening to make a Fat Penguin Paipo recently, and this morning I found one in my e-mail box. A thirties-era Santa Cruz plywood model named Grandpa Fred. More info later today when I get off from work.

arguably the only functional fat penguin design I've seen.

Having followed that little fiasco in Swaylock's, and knowing far more about hydrodynamics* than the fat penguin proponents, it's all, repeat all, hogwash. That joker was tossing out buzzwords that he didn't know the meaning of and peddling his nonsense with constant babble, nothing more. As if he was hoping that somebody would believe him and pay for the dubious priviledge.

Sadder yet, it happens. Considering the picklefork gemini 'designs' that have their misguided adherents and many other hyped 'designs' that add up to nothing.

The thing about science and engineering and formal hydrodynamics in surf craft design is this: ...there is none. No known testing that'd qualify as testing in any real sense, nothing that'd qualify as rigorous...it's kinda pathetic.

doc...........

*anything, any knowledge at all qualifies as 'far more' than absolutely zero

Hey doc,

Speaking of... that was quite an unfortunate situation with Swaylocks, eh? A couple days before Michael Paler finally shut it down, I`d had way more than enough. For me, that whole drama about the Fat Penguin wasn`t the main problem... just the last straw.

I`m stoked to see/learn about somebody`s new ideas, functional or not. But aside from the incessant FP presentation, there seemed to be a growing, conventional, status quo undertone there in recent months... exclusionary? elitist? Or was that just me... becoming paranoid of footboarders??

It was unfortunate to observe the gradual, quiet disappearance of many of those who had shared the most wisdom, knowledge and camraderie in Swaylocks over the past years. Personal correspondence confirmed my suspicions. I hope they`ll come back after Mike gets his new forum back online. Anyway... you were (are) one of the trustworthy bright lights.

It's probably just a manifestation of the times we live in: you can't conform fast enough. Everybody wants to Walk On Water, but not hang on the cross. Perfectly willing to drive a few nails, though...exercise buffs you out, makes you look good when you go to the gym. Sense of humor is seen as a sign of weakness. No forgiveness. Hang Martha Stewart for what she did at Enron and Arthur Anderson... paranoia? Hee hee hee...they can't charge for air, can they Dale? And the equipment ranges we're interested in here don't require giant SUVs to haul around...downright UnConsumerist. That might be worse than "nonconformist" in the authoritarian lexicon these days.

If anybody gets down in the dumps thinking about all that, I highly recomend the John Carpenter classic film "They Live" for a solid hit of Old School surf attitude. Maybe somebody ought to start "They Live Paipos" Wink

Posted that last one and got in the shower, immediately thought that I should point out "They Live" is a low-budget, highly creative sci-fi film, not surf porn of any kind. Don't want anybody to check it out and then go over the top on me - my "HateMail" account is currently full.

You could watch it drinking fine rum, but it's more of a working class shot of tequila, bottle of beer movie...

Well, first off, and in ADD inspired disorder..... considering me as in any way a bright light just kinda demonstrates how dim the bulbs generally are in surfing. Present company specificly excepted. I mean, hey, I'm a 1/10th trained Naval Architect who did the reading. I know Jacques Shite', and I know how little that is, so coming off as somebody with skills and such, well, it's kinda depressing.

Pedestrians, footboarders, or as I think of them, sheep - they see something that performs better, works better, is cheaper and easier to operate well, and if it's not standing up on a 9'6" in the manly way of 1962 ( chest beating, drooling and lack of forehead inserted here) then it's not surfing to them. Pathetic. Baaaaaaaaaa

Rod and I have a mutual acquaintance, a can't surf even on a 10' tank guy who has been making loud noises on forums and groups and such about the old same lie above. Of course, the guy has enough other issues going to stock a pretty good sized newsstand.

And I suspect that some of it was the blackest satire; agreeing with the idiots to encourage them to keep on going right to the end of a very short pier. Least, I hope it was.

Speaking of idiots...have you seen that kid on the kneelo forum? 'Can I add fins to this cheezy old bodyboard and make it into a kneeboard? ". And then he starts with 'are there any young guys who I can learn from? ( not you old farts who are so obviously past it). He's shopping around to find somebody as dim as he is who will agree with him.

I have to say, there is no idea so asinine that somebody won't try to make a surfboard out of it. Anyone with a clue will look at the thing and say 'hey, Orville, this ain't gonna fly', but then you'll get three jokers popping up to rank on ya about stifling innovation. There is another bozo on another forum who has anointed himself the defender of the picklefork board, along with the claims that it'll do everything but open your beer for you. My bleeding word..... the guy has to be a lawyer, as I can think of no other way that he could have gone through life so innocent of understanding of technical things.

I got to Swaylock's kinda late, so unfortunately I hadn't encountered some of the brighter lights. Mike is hereby nominated for sainthood, as it'd take a saint to put up with all that. Not me, I haven't got the patience to tolerate those who a capricious deity has seen to gift with slightly less wit than he gave to most household furniture.

The trends I think I saw there, to how do I make my really stupid graphic on my board and precious little of how to make the board better and stronger...argh. People in theory learning how to make a board and what's important to them, and what they want is to make their moronic Christian Fletcher cave paintings on the board? Ayyayayayayai.

Oh, and Nels - I agree. The dumbing down is spooky. That Get off the riding lawnmower to get in the gas guzzler to drive to the health club so I can work out mentality is getting a little too prevalent. Consume because otherwise the neighbors will talk. Ah well..... I've got some Red Dwarf videos, and it's snowing, so I think I know how to spend this afternoon
