On pages 40 and 41 of Petersen's Surfing magazine Volume 1 Number 6 (August 1964) we find a bellyboarding article that includes photos from Waimea Bay by Greg Noll. In one of the photos by Beverly Noll it looks like Greg is sharing a wave (drag racing?) with a paipo rider. The word paipo does not appear anywhere in the article. The article mentions the Mouse as the only commercial bellyboard. I have to wonder exacly when the Greg Noll brand of plywood paipos were being made and sold in Hawaii. More research needed on that.

On page 5 of this magazine we find an ad for the Titan Mini-Board. Interesting that the word bellyboard doesn't appear in the ad. Also interesting that "ride them all the way" is a selling point. Notice also that the Dextra ad on the same page does not have a bellyboard in their quiver.

An ad for the versatile Bon-Aire combination skimboard and bellyboard appears on page 6.

The ad for the Mouse bellyboard appears on page 50. Weighs only 10 pounds!

Note: We have an older thread about a Mouse variant with a Goldie logo at http://rodndtube.com/paipo/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2535#2535

On page 53 of this magazine we see that Jack's Surfboards does not yet have thier own belly board brand, but notice that Samuel Larner and Associates appears at the bottom of both the Mouse and the Jack's adverts. Which raises the question...is the Mouse the original Jack's Bellyboard. Question

Note: neither the Val Surf or the Cooley Associates ads in this magazine are selling a bellyboard. If you want to fetch your own copy of this magazine, the cover looks like this...

Poobah,

Besides the great shots what was interesting was the reference to the "quite new" sport of bellyboarding - this was hopefully just marketing spin rather than ignorance of the widespread use of paipo in Hawaii.

Keep the articles coming.
