In another thread I posted a 1970 paipo article by Skip Newell. In that same issue was Part IV of a series titled "Heritage" by Chuck Shipman. The article has that vintage photo of the surfer with Diamond Head in the background. Parts I, II and III should be in Surfing Magazines mid to late 1969. Anybody have them?
Heres Part IV:

Hi Poobah,
Nice article by Skip Newell. I have some beat up old Surfing Mags laying around in my storage bins and will try to dig them out later in the week. Need to square away a few priority tasks first as I am just back from a 16-day trip to Costa Rica. Richmond, VA area paipo rider, Terry (and his wife), joined me for the first week before heading down to Pavones for a week. Believe he had a good time. While we waited to the tide to change or the winds to change he would pepper me with questions on paipo design -- hope he posts up here because more than half were beyond my expertise and experience -- and make entry into his personal journal. We now call him Moses _________________ rodNDtube

Surfing Magazine, Sept/Oct 1969, Vol. 2, No. 5
Heritage Series (Second in a Series): "Surfing at the Time of Capt. Cook," by Chuck Shipman, pp. 68-70. Below is a link to a PDF file or you can view the image files below.
My reading of the article is that a board similar to what is now called the Alaia was most popular and that this board was usually ridden prone. There is a mention of some very skilled riders that rode on their knees or standing. Certainly provides a good departure point for some serious research.

Does anyone have access to the other articles in the series and can scan them? Please let us know. If not, I will try to reach out to a couple of people. _________________ rodNDtube
