Hey guys- been lurking for quite a while, and finally felt the need to start cutting some wood; so I signed up.

I've been riding sponges, but it's never been especially gratifying. Furthermore, I'm a bit on the tall side at 6'4"/215 lbs, so have been pretty interested in paipos and alaia. Spotted the Grain Surfboards Paipo kit... did some research... saw league of lamaroos... saw rodndtube... and here I am.

Had some western red cedar bits on hand, which seemed like a reasonable start. I don't know a whole lot about this, so I looked at as many dimensioned pics as I could and looked for most common traits, relative to the amount of material I had. I figure I can make one, try it out, and make another one, and then another... and still be out less than the price of a decent booger. On to the pics.

This is after shaping and coarse sanding:

Bottom of the nose:

Top of the tail:

The stringers are pine, and the blank was glued up with biscuits and polyurethane glue. Its about 60" x 15.5" x 9.5" x 0.65".

I've just applied the second coat of varnish last night, hope to finish within another week. I thought about Watco Danish oil, and even have a half gallon on hand, but also had some z-spar satin uv varnish.

Thanks Mike!
I must confess that many of your boards were inspirational. I can't wait to ride it.

I've used Watco (exterior teak) as a final coat on top of varnish on a few of my recent boards. Ya, I know that sounds a little wierd. I sanded the final coat of varnish down to 440 wet/dry sandpaper. Then applied Watco with a foam brush, and then wiped off the excess right away. I let it dry a day or two more, and then buff with a clean rag. The effect is more of a satin look. I suppose one could do the same by adding a lot of thinner to whatever varnish you were using. As always....test it on a scrap first.

I'll have to give that a shot sometime, Poobah. I do have some watco on hand, so it would be easy to try.

I did get a chance to try out the alaia yesterday. It was a rather small day, mostly knee-high, with occasional knee to waist-high sets. I took out the booger first since I am used to that. The waves were nearly too small to make good use; the board is rather large and is happiest in waist-high surf minimum. I had a hard time cathing anything other than the biggest waves.

The alaia was very different- more challenging at first, but once I loosened up and experimented a bit, it really took off. I can catch much smaller waves, which was a good thing on such a small day. It is quite a bit faster, too. I can't turn it as quickly, and am not sure if this is due to the length, the lack of thicker rails, or just from low angle in small surf. Certainly the booger turns better on bigger waves as well, and is almost unrideable on small waves.

It's very different, and I like it a lot. I switched back and forth a few times, and greatly prefer the alaia to the big sponge. The satin varnish was not too slippery either, which was good. It had a squeaky feeling to it which was easy to hold onto; a good thing as I have no leash installed right now.

When I started this board, I also started another one based on some 1/2" birch plywood, which is shaped more like an oversized paipo with a crescent tail (or giant boogie board with more of a longboard nose style), which I am intending to install a pair of small fins on. While I will finish that board, I have my thoughts fixed on how to modify my alaia plans.

I think my next one will be a little longer, like 5'6" to 5'8"; perhaps slightly wider at the nose, and a good bit narrower at the tail.
