...so i can chase all this bad bad waves
Since i am a proud father of two beautifull daughters (2 year-old and 6 week old) my surfing schedule changed a bit
I go to the beach now when i have the time now (doesn't matter how big/small the waves are really) and since that is mostly in the weekend when the girls are having their afternoon sleep, i needed something more speedy to get to the beach then the 3 wheel transport-bike (i don't own a car) i normally use.
So i went totally a-team/mcguiver and upgraded my mountainbike to a paipo carrying machine. Behold the result

Not sure if this system is well-suited to the shorter board, i.e., a paipo, but it certainly is lighter:

A simple pull-behind design would be great... maybe a retirement project for me later this summer _________________ rodNDtube

GI seabags with the shoulder straps will carry a pretty good size board pretty well also. And around here they are cheap too! |

Thanks everyone for the replies!
@Rod: the bikerack in the link looks great! Some people around here ride things like that on short distances and i'm not sure how the connenctions to the frame handle bumby rides on brickroads.
I also needed something compact to fit in the small shed we have (with some other bikes), and the tiny allyways that lead to it
@Uncle Grumpy: when i first started i used a bodyboard bag with my board/wetsuit/flippers stashed in it, but found it a little sweaty on my back in the long run. All the extra weight in the bag presses you extra hard on the saddle, too so i went for the bike-rack. _________________ Increasing succes by lowering expectations

The ride racks made with PVC piping specifically were developed for riding up and down the path to Trestles, a little wider than your narrow alleys, but plenty bumpy and hilly. The bike rack paipo carrier tow-behind challenge is out there! _________________ rodNDtube

Maybe it's just my bad attitude, but I think that paipo rack eef made is just about as organic as you can make something...I guess it would maybe be a little much for a lot of riding without a paipo but if it's dedicated for surf runs I wouldn't change a thing.
We do have more fun around here.... |

I like it. It integrates with the luggage rack which looks like the same one I've got on my bike. The use of zip ties and scrap plywood is particularly funky.
A way to make a Mark II version lighter could be by cutting a one piece sideways "H" or an "O" (maybe an inverted triangle for an HPD) out of thinner plywood with a jigsaw and bolting the angle irons directly to the top of the luggage rack. Those 2x6's or whatever that are there now look awfully heavy.
Now if I only lived within biking distance of the beach!!! |

Thanks Jim!
good points! I'll defenitely integrate them into the next version! For this one i just went with some pieces of a scrap wood i had lying around and tried to make someting solid
The backbone piece is pretty heavy, the two horizontal pieces are allright.
greetings,

I wish I lived within (reasonable) biking distance to the beach too.
Nice ride! |

I've been thinking of making a mini paipo (handboard) that would fit in the front triangle of the bicycle frame....inside a zippered bag that velcros to the frame. |

That thing looks great Mike! Now i need to make myself a bag that i can velcro to the frame.
I tested the bike rack yesterday, and it went great! No bits fell of
The waves were TINY but i jumped in anyway, caught a few knee-high-driblers, and was joined by a seal after some time. How nice is that!
