I bought this Crest board with the yellow nose at Bellyfest.

Do any of you know about protecting the lettering? Yes, I could keep it in a bag most of the time, but I want to display it...maybe even ride it. Varnish or oil might be historically correct, but I'm also leaning toward a modern water-based polyurethane to avoid solvents.

Yes I think a water-based varnish is the way to go, even if it wouldn't have been used at the time, but you'd be sure there is no solvent to dissolve the paint (which I experienced once while varnishing a longboard skateboard). It would be pittyful on such a nice bellyboard.

I would use water base wood sealer with UV protecent like Thierry said. This should keep the paint from fadeing and make the board water tight

Hi Poobah,

Just a point of order here. This is not a Cornish bellyboard but a Devonian one judging by the supplier logo on the bottom end of the board. Gales was a sports equipment & gun shop with branches in Barnstaple & Bideford, both of which are in North Devon. Devon & Cornwall are often lumped together when talking about the Southwest of England but there is quite some rivalry between the two counties.
Sadly Gales is no longer in business. Great to see another original plywood survivor in such good order.

Brooky.

I need to get a better photo. There is a small shield logo to the left of the word "Crest." Inside the little shield it says, "West Cornwall Woodwork," and then under the shield it says, "Penzance."

Thanks for the info. Is Bideford pronounced "Bidferd" with a short I sound?

Hi Larry.

Oops! I stand corrected. Do you know, even as I submitted that posting I thought, 'Maybe Crest boards were made in Cornwall and sold all over the West Country' and so it appears!

Bideford is pronounced 'Biddyferd' and Barnstaple is pronounced
'Barnstuppul'

Brooky.
