UK Bellyboard Booklet, You and Your Surfboard, by Vernon Bartlett (with additional comment drawn by Maurice Bartlett) (Cornwall, UK: ca. 1950). An enjoyable read. The illustrations and writing are sure to bring a smile to your face as you browse through this book about one's joy in surf riding. The title may be a little misleading since the booklet is about waveriding with a bellyboard (paipo) and not the "surfboard" ridden in the erect style such as a longboard or shortboard. This booklet may be the first documented riding of paipos in the far reaches of the world, including the shores of England, Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), South Africa (Natal and Cape Town) and West Africa. This booklet was privately printed around 1950, with a couple of editions. Through much diligence over quite a few years a copy was finally acquired by Henry Marfleet (known as "bluey" on the paipo forums). Bluey says, "It was well worth the wait."

Excellent find! What a great little booklet; I just printed it out to have my own hard copy. Some cool quotes in here: "You must learn, first, to look upon the board as part of yourself, and, second, to look on both of you as part of your wave." Also love his "rubbish" on the beach rant . Good stuff!

"Some of the best and boldest surfing I have ever seen was by men in Durban who either used no boards at all or had boards about half the size of yours."

Wink Yes...the Royal Egyptian Cubit Board bobs to the surface periodically throughout History.

Well there you are gentlemen, the definitive guide to the slightly eccentric English sport of bellyboarding produced by a proper English eccentric. It was bound to be out there somewhere! Wonderful, wonderful stuff. I've printed out my copy. Thank you very much for sharing. Superb!

On the subject of tea trays, there's a trendy homewares shop in the UK called Habitat. I was killing a few minutes in there the other day and chanced upon a circular tray in 1/4" thick plywood (several plys). About 18" diameter with a nice shallow bowl shape for just £5 ($10). I have to admit I'm sorely tempted to go back and pick one up to try as a handboard!
Brooky.
