I have been makeing paipo (belly boards)for over 45 years. I went to the fine wood store the other day to get some balsa he did not have it and said they were haveing a hard time getting it. what a schocker! now what? he turned me on to some basswood. a little heaver but stronger and nicer to work with I like it but it cost about 20% more. so if you are looking for balsa and can't find it try some bass wood you might like it MRMIKE

Mike,

Do you know anything about Paulownia? I gather it has been used to make wooden boards.

Mike,

I notice you elect to finish your boards with fibrelgass rather than (a) varnish or (b) oil. Have you tried these finishes and prefer fibreglass or have you stuck with what you have have used over the years?

While I am asking questions what do you think are the fundamental of designing a good paipo board?

regards

Bob

I cover my boards with light S glass (2oz) and 300 epoxi because The epoxi is flexable won't shater like other resin lasts forever uv resistance. this epoxi I use is new won't yellow and cures in 24hr clear as glass. with oil or varnish you got to redo it almost ever year. also this epoxi has very low VOC, cleans up with denatured alochol. see even an old dog like me can learn new tricks. as far as good desiging go the skys the limit lots of good thinker out there I think thin is in with lots of flat surface in the rear end. thanks for the ?
