I'm not done making Cubit Boards, but it's time again for a change of focus. So my new focus for 2006 will be Cat Boards. Twin-hulled paipos. Some with subtle hulls. Some not so subtle. Some more resembling wing bulbs than hulls. I have a few things on the drawing board, but I'm hoping for unexpected surprises during the year. Join in the fun, and make your own twin-hulled paipo during 2006...the Year of the Cat Board.

This promises to be a year of interesting experimentation with the cats. Please keep us informed!

Hey Poobah,

It's nice to see this topic surface again. I've considered a few simple arrangements that are unlikely to function beyond the spheres of my mind. But, here they are anyway:

-Inexpensive 3" or 4" thin-walled PVC sewer pipe. Either squished to form, or split to use as sponsons.

-A pair(or single) of old water skis attached to ply for a sort of hydrodfoil-cat. Or, perhaps the rider could be craddled in a light framed trampoline.

-Bicycle/motorcycle innertube sponsons, wrapped around a board. Easily repositioned and pressurized/depressurized at sea. I've also considered wrapping rails this way.

I look forward to seeing the truly functional designs that others come up with, so I can finally put these feeble, cata-moronic, thoughts to rest.

-Seamus

Sigh! 2006 didn't turn out like I planned. Too much time spent moving and working on the house. My Wave Skaters (bodyboards) were the only cat boards I rode in 2006. Here's an unvarnished mini-paipo that just missed the deadline. I call it Something Wicked. Notice that the 1/4" wide poplar stringer protrudes through the bottom of the board to become a keel fin. Normally fins are the last item glued on a bellyboard. With this stringer-fin method, the fins are glued in the initial lamination of the blank.

5 pieces of wood: one 3/4x12" poplar, two 1/4x1 1/2" poplar stringers
and two pieces of 3/4x3 1/2" pine.
