I've been watching a few old videos lately. One of them is "Surfing Hollow Days," by Bruce Brown. In this old movie (1962), Brown takes us to Waimea Bay where we see a guy conquering Waimea on a paipo with such astounding success that it's just awesome.
Then there's the 1966 MacGillivray-Freeman flick called "Free & Easy," in which they also take us to Waimea Bay and show us an amazing paipo ride by someone called "Peanut Brain," and who looks suspiciously like the guy in "Surfing Hollow Days." After the ride, the narrator renames the rider "Peanut Butter;" it was a rough ride!
"Locked In!" is another film, from 1964, that also shows some old wonderful paipo footage.
But I want to know: does anyone out there in the Paipo Universe know who this "Peanut Brain" fellow was? Whoever he was, he was tackling Waimea in the early 60's and just blowing the lid off that place. I think that guy deserves recognition as a true paipo pioneer of the highest order!
...anybody out there know who he was? |
