Dale sent me this photo this morning. The board second from the left appears to be dug out. It could also be done by scarfing three pieces of wood to the nose. Interesting....

Notice also the cross hatching. Is it decorative, or is it for traction?

YOWZAH!!! 90 years of Oregon paipo action. I can definitely dig it. Check out the stare of the guy with the spoon nose. Intense. I'm trying to make out the phrase he has burned into the deck of his board. I think it says:

U CANT CATCH MANY BIG WAVES WITHOUT NOSE ROCKER! Wink

I wish I could see his complete deck lettering! Here`s all I can decipher:

U CANT CATCH MAUGH KNOU

Perhaps the surfer`s name was "Maugh Knowles"?

I also thought the front of his board looked spooned, and it`s very likely the cross-hatching on the deck was for traction as well as aesthetics.

So many unanswered questions. Fascinating stuff!

That picture is in a book called "One Hundred Years on the Oregon Coast" or some such. A history of Newport, Oregon and Lincoln County. maybe there is a refernece to the source of the photo in the book.

Do you have a copy of the book or can you get a library number LCCN or ISBN?

The name is First Hundred Years Lincoln County ISBN: 1199107344 published by the local paper The Newport News-Times. http://www.newportnewstimes.com/

I am picking up a copy at Powell's just as soon as they get it out of the warehouse and I hope there is a photo credit in the book.

I should think that they got the photo from their own archives or that of the local historical society which has a collection of photographs in its archives:

THE LINCOLN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY &
OREGON COAST HISTORY CENTER
545 W 9th, Newport
541-265-7509

Dale sent the pic to Poobah and he lives in Newport so maybe he can help.

Of course, there is always the Library of Congress. Wink

"Surfs Up on the Oregon Coast, circa 1915 (Cowabunga)" #449T

Copies available:

Newport, OR 97365

After way too much thought and examination about the guy's eyes, I have concluded they are shut and what we are seeing is his eyelids...like a sleeping herding dog with those evolved eye patterns in their fur there. He's probably avoiding eye contact out of embarassment, as his obviously Island-inspired narrow plank, fully shaped or at least sanded, is misunderstood if not outright mocked behind his back. The two hotties on the right apparently prefer the company of the slicker guy in the middle, who isn't even wet.
