Sure looks very similar to an aquaplane (towed by a powerboat) that dad and I built in the late 40's or early 50's (and commonly referred to then as a "surfboard"). However we steamed the lumber at the front and bent it up instead.

Still possible to find them in tourist shops in Cornwall and Devon... were very popular in the '60's, although people have been using them for most of the 20th C, basically from when seaside holidays became all the rage.
No idea if there is a Hawaiian conection or whether it is something completely home grown, Basically you stood there in the sea up to yor bum, and when the white water came you threw yourself forward and was pushed to the shore _________________ in the green room then |

I especially like the metal ass plate on that Sun Ray board. With thoughtful nail holes for extra friction! |
