Who's got the sick computer? I've been receiving infected mail (allegedly) from both Mr. Nels and Paipo.com, but that doesn't necessarily mean they've got the sick computer.

Poobah,

Check your PM. Shouldn't be me - anybody else get anything suspicious with my name attached please let me know. vagabondsurf.com was under constant attack during the Swaylock's flameout a few months ago with rather carefully targeted subject lines, but that abated. Too bad the dweebs who put viruses out don't try to screw up the ad and spy ware people. That crap has been such a problem, and the fixes so time consuming, I'm sitting on a backlog of material (including photos of a Newport Paipo Concave Vector with basic dimensions). I guess that may have to wait longer while I run the diagnostic panels again just in case.

the most amusing was when I received virused email that was purportedly from another of my own email addresses.

Turned out to be an idiot who had both of those addresses in his contact list. And who I had told, repeatedly, not to open attachments that were not genuine graphics, jpgs or gifs. I would repeat it for a few minutes straight,Do Not Open Attachments . I even set his computer so it couldn't open email attachments at all, 'cos no way was he gonna figure it out..

His answer was "Oh, man, but these guys sending this stuff are friends of mine". I tried explaining how it all worked, but he's a SoCal skateboarder and thus very non-technical. And he's whine and wail and I'd change it so he could, but I'd say 'Okay, but this time you're gonna be smart about it, right?"

After the third time he got nailed I informed him that I wasn't gonna fix his computer again ( for free) and that there was an outfit that would do it for him ( for $125 ) and ___-____ was their number.

Funny thing, he's gotten a lot smarter about opening attachments. I should have charged him the $125. That's ok, I need a new laptop, and he's got one that's fine except slowed down to almost nothing by all the spyware he's happily downloaded and installed.

Finally done (how many hours later?), and my computer isn't harboring anything communicable virus-wise.

Since Doc mentioned opening attachments in e-mail you aren't sure about, I thought I'd put my middle finger in and mention the stuff that gets malicously downloaded without your knowledge or consent while visiting websites...and I'm not talking porn sites, either. I had to stop enjoying the wicked twists of CollegeHumor.com and friends because of that. This crap is going to hurt the www.

Maybe tonight to Tuesday I'll get those paipo photos up.

Got another one this morning...a W32 Netsky that supposedly came from telepaipo Greg L. in the Bay area.

Combine him with Nels, Lindbergh, and my old OBGetty Yahoo address, and I have to say the common denominator might be Rod. Anybody hear from Rod lately? Oh, well...onward and outward...John Galera just sent me some El Paipo photos.

I cheat - while my latest dump-surplus computer came with Norton, I still prefer a weekly run through http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ , an online, free and very regularly updated virus scanner. Some viruses ( virii?? ) are essentially set up to mess with Norton, so I run one, then the other. But I don't have a virus scanner running in background all the time.

Instead, I do have a firewall running full time: Zone Alarm, a freebie that handles what I need it to handle. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

And I don't open attachments that I'm not sure about. An email with an .exe file attached. or anything that ain't jpg, gif or pdf? Naahh, I don't THINK so.....

For those tedious spyware items that slow your machine to a dead halt... http://www.tucows.com/preview/310138.html ; Spybot - Search and Destroy 1.2 - very nice and it's freeware too. Run it while doing other stuff and it'll block spyware downloads. It also cleans out what you may have now, inluding spy-type cookies

As for the purported address of an email containing a virus..... I tend to right click on the message, get its Properties and Details, see what the originating ISP is. Virii are getting trickier, so one needs to be more sophisticated in finding out just who it is.....

Sorry, 'twas not me. But I did receive one or two funny emails. Did not reply or open them. As others have suggested, do not open an attachment unless the sender is known and specifically details what's being attached. Any attachments with filenames ending in COM EXE SCR are no-no's. If it ends with ZIP you have the option of downloading the file (do not open) and then viewing the file with a file viewer... but it's much safer when along the lines of, Poobah, "attached are 4 pics and an html file on my new paipo, Green Lines V."

P.S. My home PC has a router firewall, v.com/TrendMicro s/w firewall, v.com/trendmicro virus scanning s/w active, and I regularly run SpyBot and Ad-aware (both freeware). Regular updates to Win O/S. Not using MS Outlook email client also helps. Other than that my work has kept me way too busy as of late... that loosens up in August and I plan to take some serious time off in Sept/Oct.

The telepaipo address was probably obtained from someone else's address book -- most likely an Outlook user. It's an old secondary Internet email account that's been inactive since eary January. My system is clean and running behind updated hardware and software firewalls with additional Internet security programs in force. As a precaution, I've cancelled the old account and will ask Rod to remove that address from his web site. If you receive any more emails from telepaipo, please delete them.

I utilize Notron firewall and virus checker. I scan all items sent out from my email. There was no virus's in the pictures I sent Poobah. I'm running another complete check just in case.

For the benfit of the new folks here, I should point out that Stormseeker isn't referring to an address on this forum, but rather some addresses that are listed on Rod's original paipo website at
http://www.rodndtube.com/paipo/MyPaipoBoards.html
in a section called "The World Wide Web of Paipo Boarders." And once again today I received suspicious mail from an address listed on that portion of the website. This time from TDpaipodudes.

Rod, when you get some time, perhaps you could delete that section from your website. It's not needed anymore, because we have this new forum of yours that allows us to safely communicate.

I'm still curious to know if any of you detected infected or suspicious mail from addresses that contained paipo or something similar in the sending address. I'm starting to wonder if someone is targeting me specifically. The Freemasons and the Poobahs split apart centuries ago, but there's still some bad blood. Oh, yes.

Good idea. I will scrub the email addresses from the site. At a later date I might code them with some stealth email coding... that or crosslink their profiles on this forum. Check back in a few minutes.

I haven't received anything with a paipo-related "originating address". I will offer that at various times at vagabondsurf.com we have been subject to waves of pus-filled messages, some quite well thought out, usually after bodyboarding or other inflammatory content went online. Maybe a 50/50 chance on your being targeted; if someone wanted to lurk around and create some paipo animosity, this might be one way to do it. I fear so many people standup surf these days that the air up there must be polluted. Razz

Of course, paipo people and prone riders are generally such nice, trusting types that we may just have caught a cold...
