Just posted and updated this clip to the MyPaipoBoards.org website during the past few hours.

BBC. (Late-1950s/early-1960s?). John Betjeman bodyboarding. Posted by Lightw81.

Video clip of people enjoying English-style belllyboarding. Best guess is the footage is likely to be Polzeath from the late-1950s or early-1960s. It was taken from a BBC documentary on Betjeman and was presumable a home movie shot at Polzeath, North Cornwall. See the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whW5exlFoc4.

Nah, a contemporary in part as afaik GBS was born abt 1880 however Betjeman did it better in screwing class and social pretensions.

In short a REAL Gil Scott-Heron for his time.

betjeman holidayed at trebetherick which is just above daymar bay. daymar is a bit sheltered (you can google earth it) and polzeath, just above, more exposed so its highly likely thats the beach.

he came to trebetherick as a child, as an adult and later bought a house there where he died in 1984. He's buried in St Enedoc's just a half mile away, lovely old church that you cross a golf course set in sand dunes to reach.

if you can find any of his films about cornwall they are simply stunning, his love of the place ran deep. and his poetry of the place, especially talking of coming down on the train from london, is beautiful. there's a great book called 'betjemans cornwall' that is worth getting if you want to find out more - sadly no bellyboard shots though!

its really funny how this little clip has shot around the web since it was unearthed by UK author cora devine a few weeks back and casually mentioned in a tweet one night.
