Thought I'd share my winter project... A pine/cedar paipo. Inspired by some pics I saw of the Grain sea sled. I've shaped some surfboards and made some wooden hand planes, but I've never even surfed a paipo (although I spent the 80's on the trusty old Morey Mach 7-7 bodyboard). Should be a fun summer toy, but right now the water is still around 43 degrees, so I think I'll stay higher & drier on my longboard right now.

Nice piece of workmanship! What are the dimensions of this board, Length x Width x Thickness and Width at 12" from nose and tail? Tail width? Doesn't appear to be much nose or tail rocker.

P.S. Where in NC are you based and where do you ride?

Here’s the dims: 44” x 21 ½” x ¾" Nose – 20 ½” Tail 18 ½” Tail block – 9”
Made from ¾” stock, so not much room for rocker. Pictures don't really show it, but it does have a flip in the nose with the added thickness from the nose block/hand grip and the tail, with it's channel thins down to ~ ½"

I’m in Southeastern North Carolina.

Enjoying looking through all the old posts at all the boards... such amazing diversity! They all look fun.

43°! Shocked
I had no idea the water got that cold that far south on the east coast!
ICK!
You have to get up around BC or Alaska to find water that cold out here. (Praise Kahuna!)
I recently read the TSJ article about Bob Holland and now I understand why he said he hates cold water and won't go in until it gets up to 60°.
BTW,
Beautiful work on the paipo; how much does it weigh?
Looking forward to a ride report...........in the summer Wink

The water has been a lot colder than normal this year. It's caused problems, a few fish kills due to the extreme cold. It got cold quickly, too. I was out at Bogue Banks in November, it went from mid 60s to below 60 in a matter of days.

It’s been the coldest winter in recent memory. Surf report says the water’s warmed up to a balmy 46 today! I get picky on surf conditions once it dips below 50. By mid summer it’ll be in the lower 80s. Just thinking about that makes me want to buy a plane ticket.

Not sure ‘bout weight, I’ll try to get around to weighing it.

The most paranoid wing on climate change thinks we may have or be very close to the point of "killing" the North Atlantic Current which would send northern latitudes into a mini-ice age almost overnight!
