| I was just thinking about the guy from Kailua that made two-handed boards under the label of The Handboard Company. I can't seem to find his old website with the History secton. Rod, is he someone you've interviewed? |

hey guys,
are you putting rocker in the nose for these boards? (would a simple ply one work)
do you go as fast on them as on normal paipos?
and finally  what is the usual length and width of one? 20"-26" by 12"?
thanks, i wanna make one for travel and fit it in my carry on bag.

Hey Gdog! I make mine 2ft and under, and 16 inches wide or less. You don't need any rocker, ply works just fine! I would throw a tape measure over the bag you're taking away, and then build to suit. These things are fast, somewhere between a handplane and a paipo. But for portability they are hard to beat! Also, in clean crowded conditions, you can sit deep and drive yourself deep into the closeouts that nobody else wants. If its views from inside the barrel you like.....then these things are the bomb!!!!

I use 1/2' paulownia, but I guess you could use almost anything since flex and flotation aren't an issue. I don't have any action pics yet, but I will soon. I have a waterproof digital camera, and I'm gonna try get some watershots. To get an idea of how to ride them, search youtube for "the fast-food and the furious"! Different craft, same technique. It was this video that gave me the idea, and then I found out that it had been done before! Go figure!!!!

the case is 22X14
so i was thinking 20 by 13 with a round nose and dimond tail.
just the thought of a travel board is making me so happy

Gdog,
I think you're going in the right direction with the size of your board. I'd make one as long & wide as will fit your bag. At least for me, the longer & wider board style gives enough float so I can effectively kickboard / alternate arm paddle (like a full size paipo) out to the line up . I don't like boards that are too small to kickboard on, but too big /awkward to effectively swim stroke with. My boards in this style have all been 1/2" thick, no rocker- made from broken full size paipos. I bet you could get away w/ 3/8" to save weight.
Couple of old pics(110 film) I scanned of my friend riding his paipo. His board was about 2ft long, very roughly tombstone shaped. It might have just been a piece of beach debris he found:

I have fun on it, but I should mention these little boards can become a fin when you jam the rear of the board into the wave. I've made kicked versions, but rockerless is fine. A nose handle or a thickened nose is nice for one arm swimming.
If anyone is looking for a project challenge, then you might take a stab at the Assassin Paipo....a suitcase paipo that assembles easily from several parts to make a paipo that is longer than the carrying case. |
