I keep hearing that we have a lot more sharks on the CA coast these days. The news is saying great for everyone but surfers and swimmers. Is this justa buncha hype or a real concern? |

If you ask me, it's only great for the sharks and California white shark populations are VERY healthy.
http://www.sharkresearchcommittee.com/pacific_coast_shark_news.htm
White Sharks are protected, the main food source of the adult shark (seals/sealions) are proteced also.
When inshore gillnets were banned several years ago, it greatly improved the chance of survival of young sharks whose main food source is mostly inshore fishes, especially flatfish (halibut, sole, guitar fish etc.)
A young shark's diet lives in fairly shallow water so they spend a lot of time in very close to the beach and encounters are on the rise.
Also because of the outbreak of SUP's and their elevated view, shark sightings are becoming more common.
That said, you are still safer in the water than on the road to the beach.
FWIW, This was in our local Patch news the other day...

I've only had one encounter but it was enough to make me very wary. _________________ Prone to ride. |
