Flotation IS nice, though. I learned a bit about the basics of surfing in the past couple weeks, and I rather enjoyed just floating, straddling the board and feeling the current.

I like flotation in weak mushy surf. I love neutral buoyancy when the surf gets big and powerful.

I tend to agree with Spudnut on this one albeit my idea of of neutral buoyancy is much more buoyant than Spudnut's. Let's just say that for weak mushy surf I prefer more buoyancy than for punchier waves. Buoyancy for weak waves translates into easier wave catching and riding through flat spots -- duck diving is usually not a factor. Less buoyancy means more freedom in riding and easier duck diving -- catching waves in more critical surf isn't much different.
