I was on holidays in Vanuatu last week, and on the tourist TV channel for a brief second it showed a handful of locals walking along the beach and they all had timber paipo style boards! No footage of them surfing though
I didnt get into the surf (no board anyway), but when we were out on a boat the guide saw me taking wave photos so he took me closer to the breakers

Cool. I've heard good things about the surf in Vanuatu. I would have gone nuts seeing waves and having no board. Would probably have gone native & made myself a local style paipo too, and some fins like this guy's:
or maybe some shoes fastened to pieces of plywood. |
