Tim (aka soulglider) came over the other day with 3 sheet of 1/4" marine ply we made one for him with a concave on the bottom I will like to see how it works. I sent him home to finish it. mine was the same shape but only 1 sheet of 1/4" ply and a monkey pod wood nose and a hoop fin. the hoop fin went missing on the first wave. so much for that idea now it is just flat and real flexeeeeey real good fun!!! tim you got to try it

Mike,

Nice job. One sheet sounds way too flexy for me. Is this style of board a new design direction?

regards

Bob

Ive made a few dozen hoop fins and I fnd a thicker chord of about 3 in gives it a lot of lift.
Wider diameter is better too, I tried 6 in but right across the tail should work well too.

Hey Mr Mike! you seem to be one of the most experienced shapers in this forum so I will direct my questions your way, but other opinions are more than welcome---

1. how do you attach those nose blocks to such thin boards and make them stay?

2. what type of glue do you use for wood on wood?

3. how do you put a concave into a 1/4 inch board?

4. do you glass or varnish your boards--the finish looks great-

anyway thanks for listening and thanks for any info you can share-

I think I know Mike well enough to answer....glue the nose block on the top surface of the nose, not edge to edge. He does some shaping of the block before and after gluing it on the board.

Tightbond II glue.

Sometimes oil-based spar varnish if the amber tint compliments the wood color. For a clear finish he uses Minwax quick drying polyurethane. Sometimes you don't want to lose the natural colors, like some of the green colors in poplar.

Concave on 1/4 wood?? You could bend it while riding the wave. Or do a surface mount concave with a toilet seat.

i really like the surface mount concave--that and a newspaper and my morning is all set-i can see it now--

thanks very much for your reply and info==just made my first paipo today and hopefully can get it in the water soon--i just used a flat sheet of plywood and cut a real simple straight outline with some rounded corners.

the wood thickness was measured in mm's but appeared to be about 3/8 inch thick. 1/ 4 just seemed too floppy for me rookie that i am. i have to tell you this: I am an older fellow and it has been many years since I have made my own surf rider--I did it a lot in the late 60's and early 70's but started making money so I bought what i needed/wanted. I have not "rolled my own" since then....making the paipo today was a blast and even if the thing becomes the 2nd titanic, it is still very rewarding...can't wait to see what happens

thanks a lot,

flojo

Hey Kage--
I live in pacifica but spend most of my time in the Montara/Half Mood bay area due to romantic interests-plus I just like it better--my usual range of surf spots is ocean beach in the city down to santa cruz--I usually stay away from the "name" surf spots to avoid the crowd hassels that can develop-
