I was doing some 'net surfing and checking out the photos from the Currumbin wood board gathering:

Wondering if there's one in Cali?
None that I know of...
And if not, why the heck not ?
Not Sacred Craft, Not LBCC,
A Wooden Board Gathering.
Interested?

Should we call it "Pagan Craft?" The wood boards were in the majority at our Big Sur meeting...until Tim showed up.

It's not there yet...must be a time lag...or Father Sarducci is censoring me again.

Here's another thought...we put together a wood board contingent for Tiki Oasis 2010 this Summer:

I like that idea also but I really think a Wood Board gathering would get an excellent response.
The few people I've spoken to so far are interested.
Can you tell me if the LBCC gets a permit for their meet at Doheny or do they just show up?

Yes, the meetings in State Parks have to be scheduled and they aren't free. That's why many of the meetings are on private property, like the parking lots of surf shops, hotels, and restaurants. I'm not sure what arrangements are made with the Surfing Heritage Foundation when the club meets there.

Of course a show and tell event is a different animal. If we're not selling, then sales tax is a non issue. It would just be a gathering of like-minded people. Some cities have a different definition of "large group." San Diego imposes a big fee if food is catered at a large beach party. Displaying your board on a towel on the sand is different than putting your board on the lawn. Plastic tarps on the grass is frowned upon if conditions could cook the grass. Other things to consider...do you want it to be a riders event? And do you want to attract (educate) the general public passing by, or are you simply preaching to the choir?

Something I was thinking about last week...I mentioned it to Tim. I call it the Junkers Academy. A board building challenge where you have to build a board or two out of junk wood....alley trash or something you get free on Craigslist. A bed frame, an old stereo cabinet, a broken coffee table, a shed door, etc. Then we all get together for a beach party to share our "Junkers." Perhaps even an annual meeting of the Junkers Academy.

Sounds good to me. I could get inspired for this. More fun to ride them than just look at em.

I agree the junker event would be fun.
I'm also interested in beautiful wood surfboards built by people enjoying the creative process as much as the surfing.
I may try to organize an under the radar event at some point...
