This flat, onshore spell sure has been conducive for board building!

BJ,
I'll be interested to hear how this one goes. How long is it? Are the fins resined in or fixed some other way? It looks pretty thick - is it made to be ridden stand-up?
regards

Hey there Bob, Its about 46 inches by 16 inches wide. It's purely for prone surfing, and the fins are marine ply which I slotted in and glued with polyurethane glue. I'm gonna test it this afternoon so I'll post a report tomorrow!
Thanks for the feedback Mike, I've never done one with fins before, so this should be different! _________________ "It's not a beer-belly, it's a displacement hull"

Hey kid,
So how'd the new paipo go? Looks very cool. Love those fins! I'm still considering your offer of swapping a custom paulownia paipo for a vintage plywood bellyboard by the way!

Yes, love to know how it rode compared to no fins alaia of similar size!
Also curious how you came up w/ the 16" width. Sort of alaia standard? Trial and error best width for you prone? Couple inches wider than your hips? Or...???? |

Hey Geoffrey, 16 inches was the width of the board I butchered to make the paipo, so I just ran with that. I'm gonna make another one soon, and I'm gonna make it somewhere between 18 and 20 inches. I rode it in 3-4ft beachbreak waves and the difference between the finless alaia is remarkable. Not better, just different. It doesn't have the super fast, drifty feeling of the alaia. But it makes up for it by holding in well in top to bottom carves and rapid direction changes. I find that the finless alaia makes you pick the best line based on the shape of the wave, whereas this thing will go anywhere you point it. Really good fun!!!!
Hey Brooky, I'm still planning on coming over for the Belly board worlds in Sept, we could catch up then maybe? _________________ "It's not a beer-belly, it's a displacement hull"

Hi kid,
Well if you can make it there all the way from Oz, I really ought to make the effort when I only live in Devon (just up the road a bit).
If you've not been before, you're gonna love it. Very quaint and laid back. Not in the least bit serious. A proper fun day. Just pray for a warm day (no wetsuit allowed). Period swimming costume positively encouraged and there's a cake competition as well! Mad!

Sounds like a perfect day out! I've got family in the UK I haven't seen for over 20 years, so I'm really hoping I can get over there this year! _________________ "It's not a beer-belly, it's a displacement hull"
