Mike,

Too thin is just harder work and less waves. Thanks for the advice along the way. I'll probably start work today on board #2 which has been rough shaped.

I got motivated at the prospect of trying these boards out next week - so finished off the second board today. I left it a bit thicker and it has more nose lift. It is based on one of John Galera's shapes rather than a more traditional alaia shape. The discolouring is from where the epoxy shows through - I now see why Mike glues on nose blocks rather than gluing a layer on the deck

Both boards should have 3-4 coats of tung oil with orange oil and UV protection on them by next week-end.

Tim,

I wanted plenty of nose lift so I could ride forward without nose diving - it's also much thicker & hence weighted in the tail . It is based on one of John Galera's board's outlines and they have generous nose lift. At the end of this week I have two weeks off work and plan to do test piloting on both boards.

A 'feature' not obvious is the dimpled bottom. Because I wanted to get the board finished for the week-end I rushed it (should have sharpened the plane blades) and had a low work bench in an area where I thought the light was ok. Last night with the fluouro light on I saw the dimples in the bottom. If I had used an electric sander I would no doubt have flattened them out. I can always come back to this. If there is too much lift, sanding the bottom a bit flatter could also remove a bit of the lift. As the board is thicker than my other ones there is some room for modification.

Tim,

Back about 20" the bottom is pretty flat. On this board the deck is very flat, the thinness in the rails achieved by taking off wood from the bottom, so there is a bit of a roll before the rail edge.

Waves have been pretty ordinary - Feb is starting to look better and with 2 weeks off work, looking even better.

I'll give an update when I get back. I may catch up with Bongoman for a surf during this time as he is near Byron.
