So here I am. Enough Plywood for at least one Paipo to start with, all the tools I’d need, but which one.
Aesthetically, I like the Spoon and ‘bell-shaped’ designs, but the more conventional straight-railed boards seem to make more sense for me as far as wave-riding goes.
However, it seems to me that the most fundamental question to answer, before just making a board, is the following:
“What is the essence of Paipo-boarding?” Surely the design will flow out of the answer to that question.
How would you answer that question? |

I guess for me it is FUN (and glide and trimming ) on the small waves we have around here.
A lot of swimming goes with that too _________________ Increasing succes by lowering expectations

Essentially...it's longer than it is wide, but even that is optional. |

You can get a small rocker on the nose by putting a small block (1"to 2") under the nose and clamp the rest of the board down then pour lots of boilling water on it and let it sit for a day or so .The shape is up to you. I have been make mine wider at the nose. This works very well for me.The last board I made is my all time favorite cheep and simple MIKE

I forgot the most important part. You need to paint lots of cool stuff on it. like eef does. It may not make it preform any better but you will love to take it to the beach for a swim MIKE _________________ PAIPO ON

Charl,
The esseence of paipo riding is probably also related to what types of waves you have in mind. In another post, Mike has suggested wider nose narrower tail is more suited to fuller type waves. The wide tail is a design used in big hollow waves in hawaii (though I believe teardrop fibreglass shapes have been ridden at the Wedge). The Wegener aliaia have more parallel rails though still have a definite wide point, which is forward. I have paipo with more parallel rails though these are fibreglass boards made by John Galera, with an overall design different to wooden boards.

I think the essence is getting your face as close to the water as is humanly possible.
Or dancing around the parking lot with your flippers on but not your pants.
One or the other. |
