Hi folks! I've been following this site for quite some time. Some crazy and wacky stuff up here and its great to see folks trying ll kinds of stuff.

I just picked up my new Kneeboard/Bellyboard? you can see it on my site at: http://bellyboardspaiposandkneeboards.blogspot.com/

Its 5'6x22.5x3. the tail is 14w from tip to tip and 14 deep for some crazy flex into and outa turns (thats the theory anyway) with deep, bonzer like channels. the rails are cut on the morey principle and hopefully on the those small summer days, i'll be able to ride it without fins and just as successfully as with them. i'll hopefully get it in the water before the end of the week for a review.

thanks
Tim

Tim,

When you say you'll be able to ride with/without fins - do you mean swim fins or the twin fins. Look forward to hear/see pics of how it goes.

Certainly not an off the shelf job - why the blunt nose?

Bob,

Without the twin fins. the blunt nose gives me somethin to hold on too-like sponge boards. i have a 5º remake of a Bennett with the old style longboard nose and its just not quite as comfortable or controllable to hold onto when in the the tube. what the photos dont show is that the board has vacuum rails and nose that are real similar to a sponge, thats why i'm hopin to be able to pop off the fins in the summer, if not all the time. just tryin weird stuff! Laughing

Tim

Tim,

That’s one very interesting board you have there, but that tail looks just a little spooky. I could see that thing doing some serious damage under the right (or wrong) circumstances. But for sure, the board looks like it will fly!

It must have been a few years ago.....I saw a woman come up the Ladera Stairway with a John Neve bellyboard. I asked her how she liked it, and she said she liked it just fine. Then I asked her how long she'd been riding it, and she told me it was just a loaner board she got from John while her bellyboard was being made. Imagine that?...a loaner board. Surprised

Cool board, Tim. You should be able to ride it without the fins if you have the bodyboard-style rails. I have a 54" DiStephano kneeboard made out of bodyboard materials with stiffening rods...nearly the 50/50 bodyboard rails..patterned as a sort of hybrid Velo-style shape with twin O'fishel boxes. Take the fins out and it beats the living poo out of a regular bodyboard down the line.

Mine has a pointy nose though...for paipo style I've never quite made peace with that pointy nose. The nose isn't in the water so it's probably better to be small, but the thing was built as a kneeboard so if I was carving hard kneeboard turns I wouldn't want a big round nose...maybe...found out one of my knees has "issues" so that aspect got back burnered maybe forever.

thanks for the kind words.

looks can be deceiving, after riding it the last few weeks, it doesn't work great as either a kneeboard or a bellyboard. too long for a bellyboard. fast and sticky down the line but not, real maneuverable, i think the tail makes it too stiff.

John did a heck of a job interpreting my dream. thats what i dig about him as a shaper. he's willing to listen, give his input and then in the end leave it up to the customer to make the final decision-lots a guys wont think outside the box. how many attempts at Velo were made before it worked?

Its at the glasser. i chopped off the tail points. That makes it 4'6" long. the LokBox's are still in but, might be to far back to work correctly, we'll see.

Experimentation is fun!

Hey Tim,

you're absolutely right! It's great to make something, test it, alter it and then test it again Very Happy

A friend of mine shaped me a BIG bellyboard some years ago, that looked a little bit like yours:

http://www.swaylocks.com/resources/detail_page.cgi?ID=1651

handles a bit the same too: FAAAAAAAAAAAAAST down the line, but hard to steer. Good in a way, because where i surf there are hardly beautifully lined up waves (mostly closing out beachbreak). The board works great for making fast sections.

greetings,

Eef

eef,

Yeah, brother. i've seen that board before. looks fun! i like down the line speed racing for bellyboarding but, for kneeboarding it needed to turn mo' beddah!

i'm in the process of purchasing a Shaping Room (my wife calls it a house with a garage-whatever?). i'm going to try and shape an alaia next. your goofy monster boards have inspired me for a long time.

Tim,

How does it ride as a 4'6?

bob. its works great! if i do it again i'll take out the concaves as well. i rode it it both ways. its actually way more fun without the fins in. similar to a boogie but waayyyy faster!

Tim,

Interesting. What difference did the reduced length make? A while back I considered getting an alaia board with concave but decided against it - went for the flatter bottom. What difference do you think concave would make?

Bob, i have a 5º barry bennett copy. it has concave in the nose. that board is extremely quick and trims down the line really well. i love it in that board-gives it some nice lift.

the concave on the "manta" is/was in the tail. after removing the tail tips, what was left was just partial double concaves. dont think it does much because its just whats leftover from chopping off the tail. it would probably work in an alaia, much like the bbennett copy.

my shaper pal does believe in concave for speed-he believes flat is faster. i cant seem to prove him wrong.

if you check out our latest board together (Bellyboard 030508) on my site at http://bellyboardspaiposandkneeboards.blogspot.com , that board is only 4'6 (I'm 6'5 and 250) flat bottom into a slight vee in the tail is the fastest board i've owned to date.
