I test rode my latest project today; a marine ply alaia copy. The board is 5 feet long by 16 inches at it's widest point, tapering to 9" at the tail. It's made from 3/8" ply. I finished the board with a base coat of boiled linseed and then a couple of coats of pure flax oil from the kitchen.
The conditions were clean and shoulder high. The board takes off well because of it's extra length - most short boarders and even some long boarders were struggling today. It's really snappy in the turn and locks in the face well. Pushing down on the nose gives the extra speed needed to make sections and the down the line speed is quite remarkable; I was able to punch through white water close outs easily. Surprisingly, I had absolutely no trouble with pearling, even when I tucked the board right under my chest - I think that it may be different in chop but it's horses for courses.
The oil gives the board a silky feel and it still left a slight sheen on the fingers after a session lasting an hour and a half so this bodes well for water ingress. |

If I knew how to post them, you'd be more than welcome, Eef. Any idea? |

Jon, please post the pics to an easier to access images service, such as Photobucket. Yahoo is prompting me to sign-in, join a group, etc. Thanks! _________________ rodNDtube

John,
Love to see the photos. I experienced the same problem as Rod. Yahoo wanted a user name & password from me.
Rod may be able to help with some more technical stuff.

John,
Thanks. I misread your original post. I was expecting to see the board being ridden. Still good to see the photos.

Hopefully in the next couple of months I can migrate the forum from phpBB v2 to the recently released v3, which features images and file attachments, amongst other enhancements. _________________ rodNDtube

Hi Jon,
sorry that i didn't manage to reply earlier! That is a great looking board!! Did you manage to keep the rocker flat? Mine got a a slight banana rocker once the wood dried out. Might work nicely as well _________________ Increasing succes by lowering expectations

Hi Eef,
Thanks for the kind comments. The board really flies! Nope, no bending yet but the oils which I have used to seal the board are only a partial success. What did you use? Love the look of the BIG paipos by the way.

Thanx Jon!
Ik hope they're not too big, but we'll see wat happens in the water
for sealing the wood i used a linseed-oil based outdoor varnish. I put on 4 layers and that seems too work fine. Takes a lot of time though, 'cause everey layer takes about 4 days to dry.
At te moment i'm sealing a board with pure linseed oil, see how that works! _________________ Increasing succes by lowering expectations

meant to reply a few days ago...I loved reading your session report. A glassy day like that sound so nice, I wish it was like that here. You sound fully stoked on the new board. If you get pics of riding it, be sure to post em for us |
