Well, wave period is not an unambiguous signal of wave size. Although a long dominant period requires significant fetch and duration, as well as wind speed, in order to be created--thus also producing large swells--dispersion as a function of distance traveled, and the ambient energy associated with waves from other sources also play an important role in determining what period will be the dominant period at a given location.
In the absence of any ambient energy from other sources, many of the swells (of substantially lesser size) that we receive here would also have a purple leading edge. So either this purple is a consequece of the large amount of energy associated with these long (> 20 sec period) waves, or there is not a lot of ambient energy present, or both. One has to look at the size predictions to tell which of these reasons/processes dominates.
BTW, for pics from the "Eddie", you might want to check out:

...before they're removed.
Check out the two pics of Flea V's (from SC) wipe-out. Then click on "Most Recent Picture Gallery Winter 2004-2005"; then chose a category (e.g. "Worst Wipeouts"). If you look at "Worst Wipeouts", check out IMG_275 -> IMG_280 to see a paipo boarder, or bodyboarder (which is it?), mixing it up with several stand-up riders.

The guy is "Boogie Man" Kelly, he is a regular bodyboarder at Jocko's. I watched him take off last year at 25'(hawaiian) Waimea. |
