My Surfing Story
My alt surfing name NZed
Surfa ( spelt NZed in New Zealand...not N ZEEE as in US).
My actual name David Wilcock.....(the
surname is a derivative of William the Conquorer).
Born in Liverpool, England
1961...makes me 41yrs young!
Family emigrated out in
1974 ...best thing we ever did.
Stayed in Wellington most
of my life.
As wilth most kiwis...NZers...have
done my fare share of travelling.
I studied chinese in China...travelled
around China a couple of times
Lived in Taiwan for a year...
Mostly travelled around
Asia.....China, Taiwan... Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, etc.
So it wasn't a suprise to
meet my wife in NZ who happened to be Malaysian Chinese...and a good cook
! We have two young children....Alanna almost 5 ...Alicia almost 2.
Most of my surfing has been
in NZ...travelled extensively around NZ and most of the breaks around NZ.
...not all of them surfed due to lack of swell or conditions.
I have also enjoyed most
water sports....Surfing ...windsurfing...kayaking ...sea / river..yachting...white
water rafting
First experience surfing...our
first holiday in NZ. Napier Beach....waves dump on the beach. Parents
bought me a polystyrene board and learnt how to catch waves and consequently
how not to get dumped on the gravel / stoney beach.
Surfboards
Have kept my first board...from
the seventies..good condition apart from 3 big dings from an accident at
a Wairarapa reef break...we got thrown up on to the rocks. 6ft 6 pin tail
stinger, adj fin box.....this is now kept in the garage as a momento.
I currently ride a 8ft 6
mini mel...a fun board to ride in our beach break conditions.
I also ride an old 60s 10footer....which
is an experience to ride and still trying to master.
When the conditions are right
and I get the chance to go over to our Wairarpa coast...reef breaks I use
a 7ft 4 board.
My boards have to be quite
big as I am almost 6ft 4 and approx 220lbs
Plans for the future.
Surfing...
Early Next year visit Malaysia
...and check out the surfing scene up on the east coast.
Visit the US... have some
friends in Tracy, California.
Visit Fiji, Somoa, Tonga...
check out the surf.
Bali is also on my list
!
